Contract: Permanent, 22.5 hrs per week

Salary : £29,000 per annum pro rata 

Annual Leave: 28 days per annum pro rata (Including bank holidays)

Working Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (With some flexibility for holiday cover of the collections team) Working days are negotiable.

Position Summary: Leeds Wood Recycling is a social enterprise, working to divert wood waste from landfill by giving meaningful volunteer and free training opportunities to people often marginalised from society. Since opening in 2018 we have diverted over 3521 tonnes of wood from landfill and supported over 200 people into employment.

We are looking for a highly-motivated, proactive Assistant Manager to join our team. The successful candidate will have a particular focus for managing the smooth running of our waste wood collections service, requiring strong administrative, sales and logistics skills. There is great variety in the role, working with volunteers, clients and staff in a range of ways across the business. The successful candidate will also join the team on the van collections ‘as and when’ needed – in line with demand for services and to cover sickness and holidays of the team.  For this reason the successful candidate would need a full clean driving licence and be over 25. (For insurance purposes)

The collections department is the role’s priority, but the Assistant Manager will also work across LWR to support the smooth running of the enterprise as a whole. Training & Development opportunities: Individually tailored induction, training and development such as First Aid, Fire Marshall training, CSCS card and additional training if required for the position. Full training on a range of hand and power tools.

Key Responsibilities:

Waste wood Collections Operations:

Waste wood collections involve ensuring the smooth running and logistics of our small collections team which includes staff and volunteers. We run 2 vans, which do on average15 collections a week throughout Yorkshire. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing  collections department logistics to ensure excellent service delivery
  • Coordinating and managing the scheduling of staff and volunteers to provide an effective and efficient service
  • Onboarding new customers by marketing and promoting our collections service, driving sales and developing networks and relationships with clients.
  • The ability to approach companies direct, understanding how to spot a suitable target company, and cold calling on the telephone with willingness and tenacity
  • Working with retail to organise delivery of customer orders
  • Liaising with new and existing companies / customers to book in collections and dealing with all telephone and email enquiries  
  • Creating quotes/ estimates for collections
  • Joining the collection team on collections, loading / unloading / driving the van 
  • Ensuring a high standard of Health and Safety by overseeing PPE issue, training and ensuring the correct Risk assessments are in place for collections
  • Induction and training new staff and volunteers on the vans
  • Coordinating the vehicles maintenance and servicing, ensuring we have vehicles for collections.
  • Responsible for overseeing administration linked to the collections services: Waste carrier licences, waste transfer notes for customers, invoicing, documenting success measures each month
  • Helping collate annual statistics of the collections for the Impact Report and individual company certificates 
  • Line management of collections team, including: Managing scheduling of holidays/ Absences / Grievance/ Disciplinaries

Warehouse Operations/ Retail department:

Our warehouse gets the equivalent of at least 4 skip loads of timber through our doors on a weekly basis. We need support with our timber management, getting it in, and getting it sold. The role also includes ensuring that the team of staff and volunteers are feeling happy, motivated and supported in processing it and upselling it. You will help with:  

  • Overseeing what wood is entering the building and working with the full team to see if things are needed for projects/ customers/ promoting timber for sale. This also includes motivating and delegating to volunteers ‘to do /priority jobs list’. Working to upskill volunteers, ensuring reuse of waste timber is at the heart of what we do.
  • Help processing/ pricing up/ marketing and promoting timber sales – This will include using some power tools (full training given)
  • Support the retail team, by having an understanding of how the department works and be able to use the till.
  • Supporting retail and working alongside the Retail Manager to ensure customer orders are processed and completed in a well ordered and efficient manner.
  • Join our culture of upskilling, this includes working alongside the Volunteer Coordinator to deliver training on how to safely use hand and some power tools (full training given)

HR/ Administration/ General responsibilities

Supporting the general manager can involve a variety of tasks, we often take on work with other organisations, commissions and voluntary networks, and we are looking for a team member who can be flexible and is excited to drive forward our missions. This also includes:

  • Creating a sustainable friendly and positive cohesive relationship between the collections team, volunteer coordinator, shop manager by maintaining clear communications using Trello (full training given)
  • Working with the manager to oversee general consumables stock /levels of things needed to help with the smooth running of the enterprise
  • Completing the necessary Health and safety procedures and documentation. 
  • Supporting the growth of LWR, inspiring the team to do their best by being a role model and an authoritative example of their possible future with the company
  • Following and upholding existing systems and processes (including using Trello), creating and implementing new systems and processes as required
  • Be a designated Fire Marshall (full training given)
  • Hold a First aid at work qualification (full training given)
  • You will be representing LWR at all times by offering an excellent customer experience. As a small enterprise, the Assistant Manager and team need to be versatile and be prepared to share in a multitude of tasks.

How the position fits into the organisation: Leeds Wood Recycling is a social enterprise (not-for-profit organisation) which works to divert wood waste from landfill, while offering volunteer and training opportunities to people marginalised from the job market. The wood that we sell in our shop is collected by our collections team, and comes from a range of businesses and building sites across Yorkshire. Our amazing volunteers de-nail and process the timber to make it fit for sale or to be used in our education workshops. We run workshops and upskill people to be able to make products to be sold in our shop.

Job Title: Driver – Recycling collections team member – Freelance

Position Details: Freelance 7.5 hours a day

Typical working days Monday – Friday 8am – 4pm

Leeds Wood Recycling are recruiting a pool of freelance drivers to help us with some van cover. We are looking for a motivated, friendly individual to join our collections team on a freelance basis. The role involves driving to local businesses and building sites across Yorkshire, collecting their waste wood, and working with our retail department to deliver timber. 

We are looking for someone who has a passion for the environment and enjoys being part of a team. This position involves working directly with volunteers from a variety of backgrounds who are looking to support their community and gain skills and employment experience. 

The work is physical, and involves sharing a van with staff / volunteers. Full PPE provided.

Job Summary:

  • Collections of waste timber from building sites, small businesses and individual domestic homes, offering a high standard of friendly professionalism. 
  • Be responsible for sorting and identifying reusable wood waste from collections, working to reduce the amount of wood that gets chipped by supporting the key aims of ‘reuse’ and  ‘repurpose’ set out by Leeds Wood Recycling’s ethos.
  • Problem solving schedule changes and assisting in the smooth running of the business deliveries/collections on the phone when necessary
  • Navigate around the West Yorkshire area (Sat Nav supplied) liaise with customers to problem-solve navigation issues.
  • Deliver customer orders
  • Maintain a high level of friendly communication to customers and volunteers by motivating, supervising volunteers and other staff members who go on collections with you.
  • Complete compulsory Health & Safety training and ensure high standards of H&S are maintained by yourself and those working with you. (Full training given)
  • Support the workshop and warehouse with preparing timber for sale at our premises, cutting, de-nailing, stacking in timber for sale. 
  • Using hand and some power tools (Full training given)
  • Keeping the yard /storage areas clean, tidy and in good order.
  • Help maintain the Leeds Wood Recycling Van.

Essential

    • A positive problem solving attitude is a must, as we are looking for someone who can support businesses logistics and aspirations to help people and the environment
